Why Cybersecurity Training Matters Now More Than Ever
In today’s hyper-connected world, cybersecurity isn’t just a tech issue; it’s a business imperative. Cyberattacks are becoming more frequent, sophisticated, and devastating, leaving a trail of financial losses, reputational damage, and compromised data in their wake.
Especially in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, where digitalization is rapidly advancing, the need for robust cybersecurity measures has never been greater.
The Numbers Don’t Lie
According to a PwC study in 2024, APAC’s cybersecurity spending has been steadily growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.8% since 2022. This trend is expected to continue, with spending projected to reach a staggering US$52 billion by 2027.
The report also showed the number of mega breaches experienced by APAC organizations has risen considerably in recent years. In 2023, 35% of organizations reported experiencing data breaches that cost them anywhere from US$1 million to US$20 million over the previous three years.
In Singapore, the cost of cyber incidents can be particularly high, reaching up to S$1 million or 10% of an organization’s annual turnover. This underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures for businesses of all sizes in the Lion City.

What’s more, a 2023 report by the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) showed that eight in 10 organizations have encountered a cybersecurity incident within a 12-month period, and one in two organizations encountered it several times a year.
These attacks could cause significant disruption or financial damage, with the cost of a ransomware attack in Singapore estimated to be around S$1.5 million on average in 2022.
Meanwhile, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) reported that the number of scam and cybercrime cases in the first half of 2024 had increased by 18.0% to 28,751 cases, compared to 24,367 cases in the same period in 2023. Scams accounted for 92.5% of these 28,751 cases.
The total number of scam cases increased by 16.3% to 26,587 cases in the first half of 2024, from 22,853 cases in the same period last year. Victims in 2024 lost more than S$385.6 million, a 24.6% increase compared with the S$309.4 million lost in the first half of 2023.

Major News Stories of Cyber Risks in Singapore
- Ransomware remains a threat: Ransomware continues to pose a significant threat across the APAC region, targeting both private and public sectors. In 2024, a top Singaporean law firm reportedly paid S$1.89 million in Bitcoin after hackers encrypted its systems.
- Deepfakes on the rise: Despite the many benefits and advantages artificial intelligence (AI) brings to the table, deepfake technology via AI has been wrongly used to create hyper-realistic video, image, and audio content designed as a scam. In December 2023, deepfake videos of then Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and then Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emerged as they falsely endorsed cryptocurrency products.
- Impersonation fraud still a critical threat: Impersonation fraud remains a critical cybersecurity threat as well. In Singapore, impersonation scams surged in 2024, with over 100 cases reported in September alone, resulting in S$6.7 million in losses.

Don’t Become a Statistic: Take Charge of Your Cybersecurity Destiny
These alarming trends highlight the urgent need for skilled cybersecurity professionals who can protect organizations from these ever-evolving threats. It’s no longer a question of IF an attack will happen, but WHEN.
As the saying goes, “Prevention is better than cure.” Hence, investing in cybersecurity training is like building a fortress around your organization. It’s the proactive approach that can save you from the devastating consequences of a cyberattack.
